Chris Ofili

Chris Ofili was born in Manchester, UK, and lives and works in Trinidad. He has had major solo exhibitions at Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover, Germany (2006), Tate Britain, London, UK (2005) and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, USA (2005). Ofili won the Turner Prize in 1998 and represented Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. His mid-career survey show opens at Tate Britain on 27 January 2010 and will be the most comprehensive exhibition of his work to date.

Dorothy Iannone

Dorothy Iannone is an American-born, Berlin-based artist whose work focuses on explicitly erotic and autobiographical imagery. In 1967 she left New York for Europe to be with Swiss artist Dieter Roth, with whom she had fallen in love in Iceland. This year two exhibitions – the first survey shows dedicated to the artist to be held in the USA since 1967 – have opened at Anton Kern Gallery and the New Museum, New York. Iannone’s work is currently included in two group shows in Berlin, Germany: ‘Die Kunst ist Super!’ (Art Is Super!) at the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, and ‘Access All Areas’ at Galerie Max Hetzler.

Paulina Olowska

Paulina Olowska is an artist who lives in Raba Nizna, Poland and New York, USA. She selected works for ‘Head-Wig (Portrait of an exhibition)’, currently on show at Camden Arts Centre, London, UK, and her work is included in ‘Moby Dick’ at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francsico, USA; ‘Modernologies’, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Spain; and ‘Paulina Olowska, Stephen G. Rhodes and Catherine Sullivan’ at Metro Pictures, New York, USA. In 2010 she will have shows in the UK at Tramway, Glasgow, and, in collaboration with Bonnie Camplin, at Cabinet, London.

Art & Language

Art & Language’s earliest works date from more than 40 years ago. Its name describes an artistic practice developed in response to the collapse of the individualistic cultural protocols of Modernism. Since 1977, Art & Language has been identified with the collaborative work of Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden and their theoretical and critical collaboration with Charles Harrison. Harrison very sadly passed away in August, 2009. He contributed to this questionnaire shortly before his death. Baldwin and Ramsden live and work in Middleton Cheney, UK. A major exhibition of the recent work of Art & Language will be held at the Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland from 14 October 2009 to 10 January 2010.

Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle is an artist who lives in Paris, France. She currently has solo shows at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York, USA, and at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Belgium, and has forthcoming exhibitions at Videobrasil, SESC Pompeia, São Paulo, Brazil; Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil; Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK; and De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art, Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Fiona Tan

Fiona Tan was born in Pekan Baru, Indonesia in 1966. She lives and works in Amsterdam, Holland. Tan is representing Holland at the forthcoming Venice Biennale. A major exhibition of the artist’s work is planned for Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, Switzerland from May to September 2009; it will travel to the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada later in the year.

Martin Creed

Martin Creed is an artist who lives and works in London, UK. Over the next year, his solo show from the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK, will be travelling to Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan, the Sonje Art Centre, Seoul, Korea, and the Museo de Arte in Lima, Peru. His solo show at the Hiromi Yoshii Gallery, in Tokyo, Japan, will open in May.

Franz Ackermann is an artist living and working in Berlin and Karlsruhe in Germany. He is currently participating in the Tate Triennial in London and will have a solo show at Kunstmuseum Bonn in December 2009.

Spartacus Chetwynd

Spartacus Chetwynd lives and works in London. She has recently had solo exhibitions at the Migros Museum, Zurich, and Le Consortium, Dijon. This year she will be included in the Tate Triennial, Tate Britain, London.
