Once again, the fair will build on its history of special presentations, with leading international galleries devising ambitious shows by their most significant artists.

Solo presentations highlight institutional attention

Visitors to Frieze New York 2018 can enjoy solo presentations by major artists featuring in international exhibitions.

In the main section, these span figures such as Zoe Leonard (Galleria Raffaella Cortese, Milan), coinciding with her career survey at Whitney Museum, New York to David Hockney (Pace, New York), following the British artist’s major retrospective at Museum of Modern Art (New York).

Veteran artist Betye Saar’s solo presentation with Roberts Projects from Los Angeles (Spotlight), follows her solo at Fondazione Prada (Milan) and offers a preview ahead of “Soul of a Nation” at Brooklyn Museum, in which Saar is prominently featured. A solo presentation of Cerith Wyn Evans by New York’s Marian Goodman Gallery in the main section follows the artist’s recent spectacular Tate Britain Commission, and solo exhibition at Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich, 2017), while elsewhere in the same section David Kordansky (Los Angeles) makes a solo presentation of Torbjørn Rødland, ahead of exhibitions at Bergen Kunsthall and Fondazione Prada (Milan), and on the heels of his show at the Serpentine Galleries, London in 2017.

Creative and curated group presentations

In the main section, many curated shows explore urgent contemporary questions, such as Chi-Wen Gallery’s (Taipei) group show addressing natural disaster, from global warming to nuclear contamination. A new project by Matthew Brannon (Casey Kaplan, New York), meanwhile, explores the history and imagery of the Vietnam War.

P.P.O.W’s (New York) stand of women artists includes feminist pioneers Dotty Attie, Carolee Schneemann, Betty Tompkins and Martha Wilson, while Henrique Faria’s (New York) exhibition “Do Ask, Do Tell: Male Homoerotic Art from Latin America” includes Carlos Motta (subject of recent career surveys in Medellín and Amsterdam) and the late Brazilian artist Hudinilson Jr., among others. Also taking an historical perspective, Daniel Blau (Munich) explores the drawings of Andy Warhol - and the photographic inspirations for them - in a special solo presentation.

Curated sections

As ever, these presentations sit alongside the fair’s dedicated sections, which this year include Frame, For Your Infotainment / Hudson and Feature Inc., Live and Spotlight, together assembling the expertise of leading curators Andrew Bonacina, Adrienne Edwards, Matthew Higgs, Toby Kamps, Ruba Katrib and Laura McLean-Ferris.
