Katherine Bernhardt

Warrior III, 2021

Acrylic and spray paint on canvas

$100-250k

David Zwirner

Pink panther painting in Acrylic and spray paint
Katherine Bernhardt, Warrior III, 2021, Acrylic and spray paint on canvas, Presented by David Zwirner

I had the great pleasure to discover more of this dynamic artist in London earlier this summer, for her solo exhibition titled "Why is a mushroom growing in my shower?".  I’m thrilled to see Bernhardt's works here in Seoul, which I believe is her first public viewing here.

Jinju Lee

Act 3, 2022

Powdered Pigment, Animal Skin Glue and Water on Unbleached Cotton

$20-50k

Arario Gallery

Painting of a couple embracing behind a wall
Jinju Lee, Act 3, 2022, Powdered Pigment, Animal Skin Glue and Water on Unbleached Cotton, Presented by Arario Gallery

I am a little biased, as Jinju Lee was one of the recipients of the SongEun ArtAward in 2014, which is one of the most prestigious art awards in Korea.  She is an incredible and skilled painter with a unique and personal narrative.  With the support of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, an extensive book of her works has been published this year which includes with texts in English.

David Salle

Hammerhead II, 2006

Oil on linen

$275,000

Lehmann Maupin

Cartoon-like painting of a human warped into a spiral
David Salle, Hammerhead II, 2006, Oil on linen, Presented by Lehmann Maupin

I think David Salle is an artist that will undoubtedly be remembered in the decades to come as an important American painter.  He first showed in a solo exhibition at LeeAhn Gallery several years ago and on a personal level, I am thrilled to see his works are still coming to Korea.

Maurizio Cattelan

Untitled (elevator), 2001

Mixed media

Edition of 10 +2APs

Marian Goodman Gallery

Gigantic hand touching light switch

I first saw this work at the Voorlinden Museum in the Hague, Netherlands.  And this whimsical, clever piece still makes me laugh. I wonder when there will ever be a Cattelan exhibition in this country!

Kei Imazu

When Facing the Mud Response of Shrimp Farmers in Sidoarjo), 2022

Oil, acrylic, mud, UV print on linen

This work is great because it looks at how recovery is possible – even from the most cataclysmic of natural disasters – when we use our minds creatively. I applaud Frieze for having this section for emerging, experimental art at the fair.
