Frieze’s Mayfair gallery space is showing paintings by Andrew Gifford and a group exhibition co-organized by artist Charlotte Edey
Frieze’s gallery at No.9 Cork Street will open two new exhibitions from 28 November to 13 December: ‘Crude Hints (Towards)’, presented by Ginny on Frederick (London), and ‘Moss Light, Painting the Atlantic Rainforest’, by Andrew Gifford, presented by John Martin Gallery (London).
‘Crude Hints (Towards)’ | Ginny on Frederick | 28 November – 13 December 2025
Ginny on Frederick presents a group show co-organized by artist Charlotte Edey. Taking inspiration from John Soane’s speculative manuscript Crude Hints towards an History of My House, the exhibition brings together historical and contemporary works and inhabits the unstable ground between ruin and rehearsal. The works fold together memory and imagination, where rooms become universes, bodies turn into vessels and familiar materials are elevated into altars, fragments and echoes of identity.
Featured artists include Alicia Adamerovich, Gabrielė Adomaitytė, Okiki Akinfe, Alexandru Chira, Charlotte Edey, Sophie Giraux, John Hejduk, Dustin Hodges, Charles Jencks, Minne Kersten, Christina Kimeze, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, Megan Marrin, Julien Monnerie, Jordan Nassar, Phoebe Nesgos, Shigeo Otake, Matt Peers, Aldo Rossi, Machteld Rullens, Lara Shahnavaz and Mary Stephenson, accompanied by an original text by Hannah Regel.
Andrew Gifford, ‘Moss Light, Painting the Atlantic Rainforest’ | John Martin Gallery | 28 November – 13 December 2025
John Martin Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Andrew Gifford, which extends across the two first-floor spaces at No.9 Cork St, and continues at 38 Albemarle Street. The result of a two-year journey into remote, ancient woodlands, the exhibition captures the vanishing temperate rainforests of Britain and Ireland through over 50 works, painted on-site in south-west England, Wales, Cumbria, Scotland and Ireland.
December Talks and Events at No.9 Cork Street
Saturday 29 November 2025, 12pm: Walk-Through for Artists: Andrew Gifford, Painting the Atlantic Rainforest
Andrew Gifford will give an informal tour of the exhibition for artists, sharing some of the challenges of working in rainforests, both temperate and tropical, as well as the techniques he developed along the way.
Tickets are £10 and this will be donated to Merlin Hanbury-Tenison's Charity, the Thousand Year Trust. Spaces are limited.
Please note: The talk will tour between the two exhibition spaces: starting at Frieze, No.9 Cork Street at 12 noon before moving on to John Martin Gallery on Albemarle Street (a two-minute walk).
Saturday, 13 December 2025, 12pm: A Talk by Merlin Hanbury-Tenison
A Cornish conservationist, veteran, and founder of the Thousand Year Trust, Merlin’s mission is both bold and deeply hopeful: to help triple the UK’s rainforest cover to 1 million acres over the next 30 years.
Merlin’s new book, Our Oaken Bones – published earlier this year and shortlisted for the 2025 Wainwright Prize – tells an honest and intimate story of renewal, the healing power of nature, and our duty to heal it in return. Copies will be available to purchase during the event.
His work restoring and protecting these ancient ecosystems has been featured in National Geographic and the Guardian, and on the BBC.
All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Thousand Year Trust.
Please note: This is a seated event in the auditorium at Frieze, No.9 Cork Street. We invite attendees to enjoy the exhibition Andrew Gifford – Moss Light, painting the Temperate Rainforest that will be on show at both Frieze and two-minute walk away at John Martin Gallery.
