A conversation on saving Ukrainian art and culture

Russia’s full-scale invasion jeopardized a vibrant contemporary art scene and centuries of artistic heritage, from museums and churches to galleries and artist’s studios. frieze editor-in-chief Andrew Durbin speaks to three cultural practitioners working within and without the country striving to preserve their culture.

Kateryna Aliinyk is an artist based in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Taras Gembik is an activist, writer, curator and performer who works with the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland.

Olha Honchar is a culturologist and an anti-crisis manager. She is Director of the Territory of Terror Museum in Lviv, Ukraine.

Andrew Durbin is the editor-in-chief of frieze. His biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek is forthcoming from FSG in 2025. He lives in London, UK.
