Nupur’s practice spans installations and performances, inspired by the urgent questions surrounding ecology and community. She often works closely with people from communities who are deprived of social benefits, such as women and migrants, to explore the prevailing social values of her region.
Tea has impacted cultures and changed the course of world history by bringing people together and tearing them apart; from the Opium Wars and the American Revolution to the mass movement of workers as part of plantation economics, from the fostering of friendships to marriage proposals through the ritual of tea ceremonies. In this new work, Nupur has arranged a tea party through a performative process. She has harvested the tea at home and through the act of sharing, brings participants together to think more closely about the origins of this everyday commodity.
This work was developed through a residency at the Peabody Essex Museum in association with Dhaka Art Summit.
