Please join Sprüth Magers for a private view of Gary Hume's exhibition, Archipelago which will feature a new series of large-scale, gloss-on-aluminum paintings composed with broad sections of colour and interlaced lines. Although the lines might create recognisable forms, the subject matter of the paintings isn’t immediately clear. In some works, the almost uniform colour of the picture plane is punctuated by cells or sections of contrasting hues. Thematically related to the paintings, the artist will also exhibit a series of works on paper. Hume often stretches his imagery to the point of abstraction, and the paintings in Archipelago have a haunting, ambiguous presence, without an obvious referent. But both the paintings and the works on paper share a subject and together represent Hume’s response to the humanitarian crises of the present day.
