Founded in 2010 by Jaime Portas Vilaseca, Portas Vilaseca was established in Rio de Janeiro to support and nurture young artists within Brazil’s contemporary art scene. Over the years, the gallery has expanded its program to include artists from other regions in Latin America. Initially located within a traditional frame shop, it became a hub for experimental practices and fresh discussions led by independent artists and curators. In 2018, the gallery relocated to a three-story house in the neighborhood of Botafogo. While the ground floor maintains a classic exhibition layout, the upper floors are dedicated to experimental projects that engage with the building’s unique spatial environment. Currently, the gallery represents 20 artists, offering a diverse perspective on Latin American contemporary art. The gallery’s program is committed to being a laboratory for experimentation, supporting projects and practices that blend poetic exploration with urgent social themes.
