“LA is like a beacon for me,” says Essence Harden, curator of the Focus section at Frieze Los Angeles 2024. “How I think about art and how I think about collaboration and the community here is very foundational to who I am and who I hope to become.”

This year’s Focus—a platform for US galleries founded within the last 12 years and supporting underrepresented artists—centers on the theme of “ecologies,” a concept that informs Harden’s itinerary in the film. Traveling across Los Feliz, Historic Filipinotown and the Arts District, Harden talks to Sam Parker of Parker Gallery, Maurice Harris of Bloom & Plume, The Box founder Mara McCarthy, Kevin Scholl of Vielmetter and Jazzi McGilbert, founder of Reparations Book Club, about how their respective programs are forging and strengthening a sense of creative community in LA, celebrating local talent and making room for intergenerational dialogue.
