‘London has informed the way I think about performance,’ says Alex Margo Arden. ‘It’s a place where histories are transmitted.’

For her solo show with Ginny on Frederick in Focus at Frieze London, Arden works with decommissioned mannequins of male workers from the National Motor Museum (UK). The artist detaches these ‘surrogate bodies’ from historical scenes, releasing them from their stillness to create a chaotic and uncanny cluster of men, bound together by a tug of war rope.

In Ginny on Frederick’s Farringdon gallery space – where Arden has been working to create her installation for Frieze – she reflects on how her latest work acknowledges and unsettles the histories of industry and entertainment, from London to Hollywood.

The mannequins are ‘no longer arranged neatly into scenes of progress... I’m remaking and restaging elements of the past, exposing these slippages, the points where representation doesn’t quite line up with reality, where authority starts to look more shaky.’
