At a special ceremony during Frieze Los Angeles 2020, the first Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award was awarded to Silvia Lara.

A collaboration between Frieze, Deutsche Bank and award-winning non-profit Ghetto Film School, the Award saw ten finalists selected from an open call, who produced their own short films during an intensive three-month program at Ghetto Film School, working from a diversity of perspectives and adopting a rich range of approaches.

The finalists’ ten films were screened at the award ceremony on the opening night of Frieze Los Angeles in the Paramount Theatre where host Shari Frilot (Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival) announced Lara as the winner. Selected by a jury including leading art and entertainment figures artist Doug Aitken, Jeremy Kagan, Sam Taylor Johnson and Hamza Walker, Lara’s winning film ‘Beauty Never Lost’ comprises poetic vignettes, capturing the essence of life in her home town of Whittier, California through the perspective of its residents. All films were also screened to visitors in the Paramount Theatre throughout the Frieze Los Angeles.
