“A place of possibility and opportunity: a place to reinvent yourself” is how Lumi Tan describes New York.

As the new curator of Focus for Frieze New York 2024, and previously senior curator at avant-garde interdisciplinary arts space The Kitchen for a decade, Tan is fully embedded in New York’s art scene. In this city guide, Lumi meets gallerists including Nicole Russo at Chapter NY, Kenta Murakami of Ortuzar Projects, and Sarah Braman, Phil Grauer and Wallace Whitney of Canada, who talk about their position within “probably the most vital gallery center in the world.”

Tan also pays a visit to chef Fidel Caballero’s “progressive Mexican” eatery Corima, which she calls “an example of this ever-expanding restaurant scene” between Tribeca and Chinatown, and artist-run community space Far-Near, a peaceful space on bustling Canal Street for presenting and connecting Asian artists across disciplines.
