Frieze 91 members are invited to visit the private collection of Paul Leong during Frieze New York.
Paul Leong has been collecting contemporary art over 10 years. The collection includes over 250 works across a wide range of media including painting, photography, sculpture, video and installations. The collection has no explicit theme, but is focused on younger and mid-career artists whose work typically pushes the envelope both conceptually and curatorially. The collection has grown organically over time as different artists and works have resonated personally with Paul. While anchored in certain conceptual art histories, the collection exhibits a healthy amount of playfulness stemming from Paul’s early interest in Pop Art. The collection includes notable works by Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Lutz Bacher, Cheyney Thompson, Jutta Koether, Heji Shin, Klara Liden, Reena Spaulings, Merlin Carpenter, Ed Atkins, Tony Cokes and Ian Cheng.
Paul is an investment banker living in New York. He went to college and business school in New York and eventually indulged his curiosity about art. Although always an admirer of art he did not come from a collecting family and had never really thought about being a collector. Once he began to have more in-depth conversations about the meaning and concepts behind art works curiosity quickly turned into a passion. Paul is the Co-Chair of the FCA Friends at the Foundation of Contemporary Art and a former officer of the Contemporary Art Council at MoMA.
