At Frieze London 2025, Jareh Das curates Echoes in the Present, a new themed section that explores the deep connections between artists from Brazil, Africa and their diasporas. These ties are rooted in shared histories, marked by the forced movement of African people across the Atlantic and sustained through ongoing cultural exchange.
In this video, shot in Dakar, Das presents her intergenerational and international selection of ten artists whose work considers themes of transformation, colonial erasure and belonging. Across the diverse practices of Bunmi Agusto, Serigne Mbaye Camara, Diambe, Mélinda Fourn, Lilianne Kiame, Naomi Lulendo, Aline Motta, Alberto Pitta, Sandra Poulson and Tadáskía, land, memory and material are closely intertwined.
In Echoes in the Present, Brazil and West Africa’s entangled histories reverberate ‘to make us reconsider how things are remembered, how we engage with them in the present and how they signal possible futures’.
