Frieze Sculpture ‘Welcome to The Hop’ Open Call FAQs

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

What is the ‘Welcome to The Hop’ Open Call?

The Hop (2023) is a large sculpture by artist Jyll Bradley presented by Pi Artworks, which will be included in this year’s edition of Frieze Sculpture, London’s largest free display of outdoor art, taking place from 20 September–29 October 2023 in The English Gardens of The Regent’s Park.

The Hop is a sculpture which resembles an ancient plant growing structure – a hop garden – and a place. On selected Sundays throughout Frieze Sculpture, Bradley is inviting artists, creatives and community groups to present their work in The Hop. This may include (but is not limited to) performances, workshops, presentations, community gatherings and even picnics.

Frieze London is currently welcoming proposals for individuals and groups to contribute to The Hop. If you would like to propose an event activation, please submit your proposal by filling out this form by 21 September.

What criteria should I bear in mind for the proposal?

Participants can choose to perform/present any creative or community practice they want. This could include a performance, a workshop, a gathering or even a picnic.

Each participant will be allocated a 30-minute slot unless they specify that they need longer.

How long will the work be activated at the fair?

Each ‘Welcome to The Hop’ Open Call session will run for 30 minutes from approximately 2pm–4pm on the following Sundays:

24 September, 2023

1 October, 2023

8 October, 2023

What is the schedule of the open call?

Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis and all accepted submissions will be informed by 21 September 2023. The exact schedule is to be agreed by Jyll Bradley, Fatos Ustek and Frieze.

Who will own the work produced for The Hop and shown or performed at The Hop

Any work produced for the ‘Welcome to The Hop’ Open Call in the Frieze Sculpture display will remain the property of the participant of the proposed activation.

What equipment and technical support will be available to those participating?

There will be no equipment or technical support available to those participating. Any required equipment should be brought to The Hop during the participant’s session.

If you have further equipment needs please state this in your application.

What is not allowed to be included in the ‘Welcome to The Hop’ Open Call?

Due to Royal Parks restrictions barbecues, open fires and animals are prohibited. All activities are performed at the participants own risk.

SELECTION PROCESS

Who is part of the selection process?

Proposals will be reviewed by the artist, Jyll Bradley, Frieze Sculpture curator Fatos Ustek and the Frieze team.

Is the selection panel’s decision negotiable?

All decisions are final. We are unable to enter correspondence with individuals regarding the outcome of their application.

Will the list of successful proposals and artists be announced publicly?

Yes. Our plan is to announce publicly who is included in the 'Welcome to The Hop' Open Call programme.
