Sung Tieu

Untitled (Everything or Nothing), 2021

Stainless steel stool and skirt suit

$10-20k

Presented by Sfeir-Semler

Sung Tieu is one of the most inspiring artists I know. Born in Vietnam and raised in Germany, in her work she accumulates, superimposes and contaminates objects, sounds and images creating factual, fictional, plausible and possible narrative layers until they become inseparable from one another.

Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme

And Yet My Mask Is Powerful, 2016-2018

Single Channel Video

Price on Application

Presented by Proyectos Ultravioleta

I have been an avid fan of Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s work since I saw their immersive, complex installation The Incidental Insurgents (2012-15). In the following years, their practice has become more and more challenging and timely, among other things investigating the use and meaning of masks before we all had to start use them.

Pacita Abad

Weeping woman, 1985

Acrylic, cowrie shells, buttons, glass beads, rick rack ribbons stitched on padded canvas

Price on Appliation

Presented by Tina Kim Gallery

Pacita Abad’s signature “trapunto paintings” are wonderful, surprising and unique. They were made by stitching and stuffing the canvas, which is also painted. Abad, who died in 2004, will be the subject of large traveling retrospective, opening at the Walker Arts Center in 2023.

Luiz Roque

Francesco, 2021

Ceramic

$6,000

Presented by Mendes Wood DM

Better-known for his video and films, like those currently on view at this year’s stunning Biennale in Venice, in the last year Luiz Roque started producing an impressive series of small, enigmatic ceramic pieces, which can be seen as a free and “opaque” counterpoint to the more narrative tone of his moving image production.

Lorraine O’Grady

Miscegenated Family Album (Young Princesses), L: Nefertiti's daughter, Ankhesenpaaten; R: Devonia's daughter, Candace, 1980/1994

Cibachrome prints

$20-50k

Presented by Alexander Gray Associates

Despite the long overdue visibility, and attention her work has finally received in the last few years, I think Lorraine O’Grady’s importance is still to be largely recognized by a large audience. To me, her Miscegenated Family Album (1980/1994) is nothing less than one of the masterpieces of 20th Century American Art.
