PYO Minhong: nothing here was ours

A video poem based on an unreliable reconstruction of a place that may or may not have existed.

PYO Minhong, nothing here was ours, 2021, single-channel video, color, sound, 19 min 3 sec. All rights reserved by the artist.

PYO Minhong uses poetic language and images through text, installation and video to create fragmented narratives and forms that suggest the impossibility of fully occupying language and place. A video poem, nothing here was ours (2021) compresses a history of speculation based on limited information about a place. The fictional narrator navigates a space with memories of an individual or others mixed together; there is a sense of a location which temporarily borrows the meaning and function of language and place, waiting to be occupied by someone else. The place in the video is a kind of fictitious absence, with no record of an occupant ever having stayed there and eroded from history. It moves into a ghostly and insubstantial space-time, conceding to the observer.
