ÖZGÜR KAR,

Death with clarinet, 2021

48.03" x 69.29" x 49.21", 00:15:00

Kar’s multi-media sculptures function as scenes from theatre pieces: Death whistling (2022) and Death with the wooden flute (2022) complete a larger series comprising three further characters, each introducing a different instrument or monologue into the score. Working with voice actors and instrumentalists, Kar produces multi-part soundscapes that unfold through solemn repetition, forging existential dread mixed with cartoonish macabre. Stoic in their contemplation, his minimally animated drawings are set in imperceptible loops that turn videos into sculptures confined in the 4K screen’s rigid edge. To view the video click here.

GABRIEL MADAN

Puppet Show (4.19.2015), 2020

Video, 00:02:00

Edition 3 + 2 AP

Presented by Gattopardo

Puppet Show (4.19.2015) serves as center of orbit in the cosmology of Madan's practice and has been exhibited via LAND, The Renaissance Society and Locker: Magic Rectangles. Like history paintings of fabulist nightmares, Madan’s work presents the uneasy pathos of glittering anxiety.

LAWRENCE ABU HAMDAN

A Speculative Portrait (for a boy who returned without his face), 2020

video, looped (colour, looped) 38 seconds

Edition 3 + 2 AP

Presented by Maureen Paley

Lawrence Abu Hamdan has worked with a young historian Bassel Abi Chahine to learn about his extensive archive. Bassel Abi Chahine obsessive analysis and unprecedented research into the Lebanese People’s Liberation Army was done in pursuit of material to reconstitute flashbacks and unexplainable memories from a previous life. In his past incarnation, he was Yousef Fouad Al Jawhary, a soldier who died during a combat mission at the age of sixteen in 1984. Though Bassel has many memories of his life as Yousef, he has no sense of what he looked like. The video 'A Speculative Portrait (for a boy who returned without his face)' (2020) illustrates an attempt at facial reconstruction: the production of an image based on a childhood photograph of what Al Jawhary might have looked like as a young adult. The technique is normally used to sketch the likely current appearance of people who have been missing for a long time.
