‘I have been interested for a long time in the idea of having arrived too late. The tension between the past and the future and the presence that is wedged in between. We all have ideas of tomorrow, we imagine ourselves in a better tomorrow, or improving our situation.’

Artist, author and former scientist, Enrique Martínez Celaya was born in Cuba and raised in Spain and Puerto Rico. His multidisciplinary practice is heavily influenced by his upbringing in the turbulent cultural and political environment of Puerto Rico in the 1970s. His work explores themes including youth, isolation, nature and the sublime.

Enrique Martínez Celaya’s solo show ‘The Mariner’s Meadow’ will open on 23 May 2019 at Blain|Southern, London.
